Top review from the United States

Karl Korsch had always been an outcast, and that quality shows in his exposition on the political philosophy of Karl Marx. This is not a starting point for someone who is a beginner to Marxism. This is an overview of Marx’s political philosophy. Korsch gives a good analysis of the political principles that run throughout Marx’s work, but engages in the occasional polemic against views which run counter to those principles. On the one hand, Korsch’s analysis is not remarkable. He conducts a broad overview of Marx’s philosophy in a selective manner, deeply examining some issues and ignoring others. On the other hand his approach is innovative, examining Marx’s works in terms of principles only. In both sides, he assumes the readership already is familiar with and comfortable with the fundamental issues and concepts. My suspicion the real purpose of this book is a polemic against Party regulars who disagreed with his opinion of Marx’s philosophy. He frequently uses the term “vulgar” socialists, who I took to be people who disagreed with him. Still, it is an interesting read but not worth five stars.
