A virus has seemingly come from no where, bringing with it a number of conspiracy theories as to its origin. Some of the theories are outlandish whilst some have an eerie ring of possible truth around them. But, as the world goes into lock down with people living in isolation only allowed out of their homes for essential journeys, people soon realise there are greater things to worry about than COVID-19. As the virus continues to get a grip of the world, mankind reveals the many monsters within.

THE TAINTED SOULS by Shaun Hutson and Matt Shaw is a dark collaboration filled with graphic violence, mainly taking place in the UK. If you have a weak stomach, don't bother reading this story. While I'm quick to call out authors who use rape and murder purely for shock value, in this case, it's a necessary evil to emphasize the sickness spreading throughout the population. Covid 19 is simply the catalyst to something much worse.

I'll admit, I'm not familiar with Hutson's work, but this novella is typical of Shaw's disturbing writing style. (If you want to curl up with a good book for comfort during your quarantine, you don't curl up with Shaw...especially not sober.) The variety of characters increases the suspense, not knowing how any of them will react to one another. Even within the separate groups, the dynamics are constantly changing, with everyone focused on their own individual survival.

All in all, this is one hell of a thriller, and I'm equally impressed with how quickly the authors put it together. I was hoping the house Adam came across would be the one from Octopus/Full Moon, or Tessa would have a backstory tied into one of Shaw's older stories, but I'm still satisfied with the novella as is. The ending is more frightening than anything else which takes place.

I finally popped my Matt Shaw cherry! I've seen such great things being said about his work, so it seriously has only been a matter of time. When I saw this book mentioned on the Books of Horror Facebook group, I had to get a copy and read it! Covod-19 Lockdown horror? Yes, please! The story follows two groups of trouble makers out raising hell and taking advantage of the fact that most people are obeying the lockdown orders, as well as a woman named Tessa who is about to encounter trouble of her own! Some pretty graphic violence ensues, so be warned if you are sensitive there. Loved the experience!

I can't speak highly enough about this author. He has yet to write a book that I haven't loved! This one was no exception, and it had the added bonus of being set in the very scary world that we're all living in right now. As usual, very well written, and it was so easy to get drawn into the story. But keep in mind, Matt Shaw is not for the easily offended, so if amazingly graphic tales about violence aren't your thing...well, read one of his books, anyway. He's so good, you might reevaluate what you like! Don't knock it until you try it!

The book was very well written and moved fast. It took a few hours and you’re done. I can’t say I enjoyed it because it was so close to what’s going on today ,with just more of the blood and guts.

First, I've never ever left a review. Ever. But this was a great, fun, and quick read. In these trying times, I don't think anyone can go wrong picking this up for a quick afternoon read.
Facts you should know: Covid is more of a backdrop to the story, as in there are no Covid deaths in this novella!!
It is fairly tame for a Matt Shaw book, so may be appreciated by a wider audience

I found this tale of a more potent pandemic to be very chilling and entertaining. I really enjoyed this story.

I used to really love Matt Shaw, but lately he seems to just be churning out books with little effort. This one was incredibly slow paced. I made it to the 40% mark and stopped. I would love to see the old Shaw return His last two releases have been duds.

Let's face it, chances are, if you're reading something by Matt Shaw or Shaun Hutson, you know exactly what you're letting yourself in for.

This novella is as graphic and nasty as you'd expect and I loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gory and relevant collaboration

I’m a long term fan of Shaun and fairly new to Matt so just had to read this knowing it was going to be pretty gruesome and sick and I wasn’t disappointed. Very well written and as much as I tried to work out who wrote which part I was soon lost too much in a great story to care. Using Covid as a backdrop obviously makes this very topical right now which is why it’s worth reading now too because you’ll appreciate the phrases we’re all hearing in the media too. But the core is a great short story which has plenty of sick gore in it to keep you entertained in the style you expect from these brilliant authors. Buy it now.

I had high expectations for this book considering I'm a huge fan of both authors and it absolutely did not disappoint. Plenty of violence and general gross stuff, and the story is nice and fast paced in just the right way. What makes this story unsettling though is that to some degree it's completely believable, I certainly hope what they have written doesn't come to pass, because to some degree you can imagine that it could whi h is very scary indeed. Well done Shaun and Matt! Keep them coming!
