The author thoroughly examines not only the deeply-ingrained reasons for the existence of bias, but the solutions, the ways – some already successful – that we can open our minds (hearts to follow) to experiencing a shared humanity. To better understanding where our (and what we see as “their”) behaviors arise from. To knowing how to ask hard questions and feel the hard feelings. To get to the other side with a shared humanity. To stop “othering”. To begin an awkward, difficult journey deeper into our shared psyche. To come out the other end more connected with each other, more connected with ourselves, and towards a shared wholeness.

This book is beautifully written. I’ve never read a non-fiction book that reads like a novel. I simultaneously couldn’t wait to get back to it while feeling somewhat trepidatious to because it required me to look at my own unconscious bias, and who wants to do that? But as the author so eloquently suggests, we probably won’t grow unless we are willing to go there. I look forward to having more conversations on this topic as a result of reading this book.

This is the best, most important book that I have read on the subject, and a must-read for managers, HR personnel, teachers, politicians and law enforcement, as well as all of the rest of us! Nordell spent nearly a decade exploring the historical roots of bias, collecting and evaluating studies, doing original research, describing institutional attempts to reduce unconscious bias, interviewing experts in the field and collecting stories from people that have been the targets of bias. She systematically examines the cumulative effects of unconscious bias on women, people of color and others that often bear its brunt, particularly in the context of employment, education, law enforcement, politics, as well as everyday life. Nordell highlights the insidious costs of unrecognized bias that is so embedded in our psyches that it goes unnoticed even as it wreaks its damage. She cites many examples of how organizations have attempted, sometimes successfully to combat bias in their ranks, or in some cases learned from their initial failures. There is a wealth of take-aways in these pages that we should incorporate into our daily and professional lives. This book should be on everyone’s list of essential reading.

I'm an anthropologist and jury consultant whose business it is to understand bias and decision making and to help people overcome the distortions of bias. This book is by far the best contemporary book I've read discussing what bias is, how it's made and how to transform it. It's the best partly because the author combines reporting on scientific studies with the story of her growing recognition of her own unseen and unexamined biases and the important role that changing herself has in changing society. It's a book that doesn't speak or write from political categories of LEFT or RIGHT, nor is it a book that judges individuals, other than the author herself. It writes from the heart of human experience in a beautifully realized way. If you are someone who wants a deeper understanding of how human beings get made and how we can create a just society for all, read this book.

To me, the word unconscious was key. We try to do better but fail in so many ways. After giving readers heaps of studies and statistics, the author gives us real-life examples of bias that hit me hard. Her research is incredible and writing convincing.

Jessica Nordell is a gifted and deeply engaging writer who offers empathetic insights into her research in a powerful, highly personal way that will inspire you to take a more urgent and active stance in both realizing, and finding ways to overcome your own unconscious biases. I was struck by her remarkable depth of research and the eloquent and creative way the author examines and interprets it. She masterfully weaves together scientific research with actual real life stories and case studies which show both subtle and blatant examples of how unconscious bias plays out in companies, businesses, schools, and in ourselves. Though the consequences of these deep seated biases are often startling, the solutions she highlights are impactful and reassuring. This book is extraordinary and should be on a required reading list for college students everywhere!

What a powerful and engrossing book this is. Nordell grounds her examination of this difficult subject with a wide variety of research (including a deeply unsettling/powerful study she commissioned herself), but what makes The End of Bias special is the rich, nuanced storytelling throughout. For better or worse, stories inspire most of us to change more than hard data, and the ones in this book -- about police officers experimenting with mindfulness practices; the tragic (and sadly common) cancer misdiagnosis of her female friend, Chris; Nordell's firsthand experience of gender bias at MIT and many more -- did exactly that for me. I can't recommend this highly enough.

The End of Bias is an average book. For sure it gives quite a good overview of how we form biases, consciously or subconsciously. However, it could be a way shorter book with fewer stories and more practical guidelines on how to overcome them. I'm giving it 3 stars purely because it helped me understand the process of bias formation, and it was in the first couple of chapters of the book. The rest was not very engaging.

This book is so well written, it reads like a novel. I read the first three chapters in one sitting without a break. It really made me see things in an entirely new way, and my copy is covered with post it notes. The author was able to weave scientific ideas and really mesmerizing stories together. The chapters on policing are eye-opening and provocative— and full of ideas I haven’t heard articulated in the current conversation. I am recommending this book to everyone.

The first, most startling thing this book reveals is just how poorly written most other non-fiction books can be. Even if the subject matter is interesting, a lot of non-fiction doesn't have the care, flow, and thoughtful prose of this book. This is real storytelling. Over and above that, of course, is that Nordell's wide-ranging but, ultimately, empathic exploration of the various ways in which bias affects our lives. This is a book about, and for, we flawed humans.

Very well written, with relevant facts and figures. I didn't find it hard to read at all. The opposite! Very interesting, a must-read for all of us.
