We’re all waiting for something.

It might be a spouse or a baby. It might be healing or a home. Regardless of what we're waiting for, it’s easy to feel discontent when things aren’t going as planned and our dreams are delayed―especially when questions of “Why?” and “How long?” remain unanswered.

God uses seasons of waiting to teach us patience and make us more like himself. But sanctification is not the only purpose God has in mind. When we wait faithfully with unmet longings, we become a powerful picture of the bride of Christ waiting for the day when he returns and God’s kingdom reigns.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“The thesis of this book is simple but profound: God does not leave us alone in the many ‘waiting rooms’ of life, but uses seasons of pain, absence, and longing to draw us unto himself. Deeply personal and biblically wise, this is a book every Christian should read.” —Timothy George, Distinguished Professor of Divinity, Beeson Divinity School, Samford University

“We are all in a season of waiting, even in the moments when we think we have arrived. Betsy Childs Howard speaks comforting truth to our anxious hearts, especially when we worry that our waiting will never end. What are you waiting for? Get a copy of this book and ask a friend to read with you!” —Gloria Furman, author, Alive in Him and Labor with Hope

“Betsy leads us with a gentle strength through some of the most difficult seasons of waiting and points us to Christ. This book will be a great encouragement to many. I hope you read it and draw near to your Savior who sees, loves, and cares about you in every situation.” —Jessica Thompson, author, Everyday Grace; coauthor, Give Them Grace

“No matter who you are, you’re waiting for something. Indeed, Christianity is a waiting religion as we eagerly long for the return of Christ. I don’t know a better book on the topic than this one by Betsy Childs Howard, one of my favorite writers.” —Collin Hansen, Vice President for Content and Editor in Chief, The Gospel Coalition; Host, Gospelbound podcast

“Waiting is hard and confusing; and oftentimes our longings are for good things, like marriage and children. Betsy Childs Howard has provided an excellent resource to help us wait well. She doesn’t throw out familiar advice like ‘guard your heart’ and ‘be content.’ Instead, she graciously shows us how God is working in our waiting through the parables of Jesus, the stories of others, and the wonderful promises in God’s Word. God has a purpose greater than we could ever hope or imagine and Howard gently takes our hand to help us see this to be true. You will not regret picking this up.” —Trillia Newbell, author, If God Is For Us: The Everlasting Truth of Our Great Salvation

“Betsy Childs Howard provides us with a much-needed message to strengthen us in every type of waiting. She transforms our understanding from the belief that we are not getting what we deserve, to hoping in the better life to come that awaits us in Christ. She removes the isolation we feel in our waiting and helps us see that we are all waiting for something in this life, but more importantly, we are all waiting for the return of King Jesus.” —Courtney Reissig, author, Teach Me to Feel and Glory in the Ordinary

“Betsy Childs Howard invites readers to come and connect with real-life stories that are centered on the Bible’s story of redemption in Jesus Christ. In pointing toward the hope of the gospel, this book does not minimize our painful present waiting, it fortifies the waiter and lights up the waiting with the presence of Christ.” —Kathleen Nielson, author; speaker; Senior Adviser, The Gospel Coalition

“Betsy Childs Howard writes with tender empathy for those who wait with deep, unmet longings. She shows the path away from despair toward unfading hope. A humble heart can hold both contentment and grief together in ways that honor the Lord in their dependence on him, even as they point to Christ’s return when all our longings will be fulfilled in him. Because we inhabit time with a past and a future, we’re always waiting for something. Howard reminds us powerfully, from Scripture, that in God’s wisdom, it’s good to wait.” —Candice Watters, Cofounder, Boundless.org; author, Get Married: What Women Can Do to Help It Happen

“Betsy has written a warm and winsome book that can be appreciated by people who are waiting on God for a variety of circumstances. Even if our waiting is characterized by painful longing, Betsy encourages us that if the painful longing is anchored in a firm confidence in the goodness of God, we are waiting well. Open this book and you will find much encouragement for how to do so.” —Carolyn McCulley, filmmaker; speaker; author, The Measure of Success, Radical Womanhood, and Did I Kiss Marriage Goodbye?

Earlier this year I very unexpectedly found myself unemployed. I was shell-shocked. Over the next five months I watched my finances gradually dwindle as I put in application after application with no response. I'll be honest, I picked this book up without knowing too much about it beyond the title. It didn't take long to realize that the content of the book is primarily for women, but the Bible-based wisdom is applicable to believers of all walks of life.

I was at a point in my unemployment where I had put in countless applications and had several promising interviews but hadn't heard back about any of them. I was discouraged and left wondering why God would withhold something I desperately needed. This book contains numerous examples of believers in different seasons of waiting, whether for a job, or a spouse, or a child, or a home, and how an eternal perspective helped them remain content in their waiting, no matter how painful.

This book helped me to see the purpose God had for this time in my life, that I shouldn't spend it fruitlessly, worrying about things that I could no longer control. Instead I should use times of waiting to pray, to read God's word, to seek godly counsel, to serve others, and seek to grow in my faith, and that's exactly what I did. During this time of waiting I have seen God grow my faith by leaps and bounds, and I now view this season of unemployment as one of the best things that ever happened to me. God will work all things together for the believer's good and for His glory.

Three days ago my unemployment came to an end. If you have repented of your sins and placed your faith in Christ crucified and resurrected, never doubt the promises of God.

I highly recommend this book to any believer, regardless of where they find themselves in life.

I read Betsy's article on Gospel Coalition Should I be Content with my Singleness, which was followed a year later by "One Day He Appeared. I won't spoil it go read it for yourself. The beauty is God turned her waiting around in a DAY (the God we serve ya'll) but more importantly she directs us to remember that we are all waiting and we will continue waiting for our true bridegroom until he returns. She keeps you Heaven-expectant whether you're sick, waiting for physical healing, a prodigal son or spouse, she points us back to the cross, back to our first love, back to what this whole christian journey is about. We are restless until we find ourselves in Him. Great first book by Betsy! Read it in 3 days!!

I just finished reading "Seasons of Waiting" by Betsy Childs Howard. She masterfully presents a biblical theology of waiting that has completely reoriented my perspective. She writes, "God wants to give you a richer, deeper experience of himself that is more precious than the thing he has withheld from you. God won't waste your waiting." Betsy's book was a tool in the hands of my God to infuse my own season of waiting (a season that may never end on this earth) with faith-filled hope and purpose-- to lift my eyes from the things of earth and keep my heart oriented to the Kingdom that is to come. I encourage everyone to read this book!

I thought this book was okay. I purchased it thinking it might give me a different perspective on seasons of waiting & not feeling stuck. But I think the general jist of it is just, you’re not alone & there’s a time for everything. Just be patient because things workout. Which is fine, but just wasn’t what I was expecting when I purchased it.

There are two things that strike me most about this book; the first being that it is beautifully written. I plan to re-read it slowly, pondering each chapter partly to enjoy the good writing, but also to soak up and savour the wisdom. Which brings me to my second thing, which is it to say; that it is absolutely packed full of the bible. And therefore is full of wisdom with much to feed on and think about.

As women, I believe, we can often seek to solve our problems, through running around endlessly seeking advice from every quarter whether, it be blogs, books or the advice of friends (none of which is necessarily a waste of time) and yet we do not meditate on the truths of scripture and allow them to inform out thinking. We may open our bibles and yet our view of God remains small and our grasp of the truth inadequate.

Betsy teaches us through her book to ground our waiting times in scripture and to trust a loving Father God, who is in control. But she also teaches a love of the Bible, by setting a good example, of considering waiting times, not in terms of worldly wisdom, but through the filter and truth of scripture. She points us to the Person, for whom we are all waiting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book

Highly recommended! The author doesn't try to sugar coat the pain and struggles of unmet longings experienced by even seasoned believer's but walks you through what real hope is which is ultimately in Christ written with much compassion, empathy and Biblical observations.
Just as the many stories of the Bible point you to Christ, Howard helps the reader to see how everything including our waiting is all part of an even greater story which is so much bigger than us. I highly recommend this book, even if your not in any particular season of waiting today, at some point in this life you will be so its a great book to read not just for yourself but also to help someone you know who is in a season of waiting.
