In "Krabat" greift Preußler auf alte wendische und böhmische Märchen und Sagen zurück (Preußer stammt selbst aus Böhmen) und verwebt sie zu einer ganz eigenen, spannenden Geschichte, vielleicht zu einer seiner besten überhaupt. Die Geschichte beruht auf alten Teufels- und Hexenmythen, die eine Grundstruktur aus Angst und Grusel bilden, doch tatsächlich geht es um Freundschaft und Liebe, um Treue, Weisheit und Mut. "Krabat" vereinigt Merkmale von Abenteuergeschichten und Märchen in sich; die Geschichte ist spannend, sprachlich/stilistisch gelungen und stimmig. Preußler setzt nicht auf Knalleffekte, sondern er lässt eine ganz eigenartige, mitunter gruslige Atmosphäre wirken -- und nicht nur in dieser Hinsicht unterscheidet "Krabat" sich wohltuend von z.B. den Harry-Potter-Romanen, die den Leser oft nur durch immer neue, spektakuläre Wundertüten an sich binden können.
Ein Kinderbuch freilich ist "Krabat" nicht, es ist eher für Erwachsene und Jugendliche ab elf oder zwölf Jahren geschrieben.

Un petit plus par rapport à Harry Potter, par exemple, ce roman est situé dans un contexte historique bien précis: on y découvre la Saxe du temps de la Guerre de 30 ans.
